French Advanced Variation 5..Bd7
Analysis by Jim Hawksley
John Watson's book Play the French 3 is a bible for French Defence
players, over the years I have found John's ideas and analysis to be sound and
to stand up well in practical play. One of lines I have played frequently
against the Advanced variation is 5...Bd7, this move is very flexible as it
waits for White to commit himself to a plan. I have enjoyed success against all
of White's attempts for an advantage from this position.
Recently I played an internet game on ICC and followed Watson's recommendation
of 6...Nge7, the game played out as per book till move 17. when my opponent
varied with 17.Qd2. I now played GM McDonald's suggestion of 17...Be8? and got
hit with 18.Bxh6!! (see page 33 of Play the French 3) The game and analysis is
presented below. If anyone can suggest improvements for Black apart from
avoiding the whole line they will be greatly appreciated.
